The Month Of Patience, Love And HUNGER
|
I just read the book The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. It was one of the best books I have read. It was about a girl named Hazel who has cancer. She goes to a group where everyone in the group has or had cancer and they talk about their experiences having cancer. In the group she met a lot of friends. She also really likes this book called An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten which inspires her. She has sent lots of letters to him and she has read the books many many times. She really wants to meet the author because he inspires her to keep fighting. She is just a regular kid in her day to day life but she has a lot of struggles. It is hard to go up stairs and run around even, just walking is hard for her. She also has an air tank that she has to carry everywhere with her which is really difficult. She has lots of adventures throughout the book like traveling only it is very difficult. It is a really good book and I recommend it for an older audience looking for an inspirational book that twists your emotions. It was so good and I really want to read more books like it. -Maya E |
Last Friday we went to Haskin Shellfish Research Lab which is part of Rutgers University to learn about shellfish and help the oysters. Two weeks ago someone came to talk to us about oysters and what’s been happening to them. They used to be shrinking in population because of overfishing. It wasn’t really that they were being overfished, but people weren’t put putting their shells back after they were eaten or their meat was used in some other way. Baby oysters use old oyster shells to live on and when people were taking away all those shells their population started shrinking. When we went on our field trip to Haskin Shellfish Research Lab we made bags of old oyster shells. These bags will help the environment by making new oyster reefs and it also helps marshes because they’re going to be holding up logs close to the shore. These logs are taking pressure off the marshes, making sure they don’t flood and collapse. Oysters also clean the water so they are really helping with pollution. I had so much fun making the bag and I like to think that I helped a lot of baby oysters and made an impact on the environment. -Jasmine
A perfect book differs for different people. Someone’s perfect book may be a science fiction book with a hint of history. Another’s may be a realistic fiction with a speck of fantasy. For me, The Book Thief is the perfect book. Eleven year old Liesel Meminger is a foster child who has arrived in a small village in Germany during World War II. Liesel has been sent to live with Hans and Rosa Huberman. Liesel is still sad from the loss of her little brother and the separation from her mother. She takes an immediate liking to Hans, who reads to her and starts up her love for reading, but takes much longer to appreciate strict Rosa. Soon, the feeling of war settles over the village and in a blink of an eye, the story changes drastically. Whenever a book starts out with the statement, “You are going to die”, you know it is going to be good. Death is a very frequent happening in the book, with a handful of characters passing on. But nevertheless, the book still remains the same, a classic, beautifully written story. -Tomasz |
We have been getting ready and working on our play Making The Band. It is the new 9-12 play that will be performed on May 23. The play is about these kids always playing video games. The mechanics are trying to get the kids to do something so they encourage them to start a garage band. Throughout the show the kids get more and more instruments until they finally make a great Garage band. Originally there were only a few parts but our music teacher changed it so everyone who wanted one would get a part and we all got the parts we wanted. There are only a few characters; you can be mechanic or a gamer. I am a gamer. We have been working really hard so far on the soundtrack, the dances and memorizing our lines. To figure out what part each of us was going to get we signed up for a time to meet Joe then we would read lines. Mostly the reason we met with him was to discuss what part we wanted to be in the play. Soon we are going to start rehearsals in the gym but until then, each day at a certain time, people are going to meet in the music room to practice scenes. Some people have also been working on making props for the play like a car for the garage out of cardboard and lots of instruments. Our class has had to think of lots of ideas to make the car and instruments. We have had to think out of the box to come up with the designs. The props are looking really good so far and I am so excited to see how they turn out in the end. This is one of my favorite plays so far and it is going so well. I am so excited to see how it ends up with everything together with all the props, the dances and the songs. -Maya |
Every Saint Patrick's day WMS has a visit from a leprechaun. I interviewed Chuck, a good friend of the leprechaun. Chuck says, “He knows the leprechaun but isn’t the leprechaun. He talked to him and he says he is coming tomorrow. The leprechaun is proud to be Irish. He likes to give out gold coins and stickers. He thinks that no matter where you come from you are a hundred percent Irish on Saint Patrick's Day. Leprechauns are very mischievous and aren't always nice. He wishes every day was Saint Patrick's Day.” Andrew |
In the 9-12’s, we each have a job to do after lunch. There are a large variety of jobs- from cleaning the kitchens, to cleaning the reading area, to filling the bird feeder. Here is a inside view on our jobs. Some of the big jobs include, kitchens, any animal job, such as rabbit and guinea pig and bird feeder/botanist. It is similar to doing chores around the house. Here are ones you like and some you don’t, but we still do it. Every month or so, we pick out jobs and in that time span you do the job to your full extent. For example, I have kitchens so everyday we clean the microwaves, the dirty utensils etc. So I do that to my full extent. Jobs may not be the most fun part of our day, but it is very important for the neatness of our classroom Tomasz |
Chameleons are amazing creatures. They are so incredibly intelligent, it’s almost creepy. They walk very deliberately, and they know everything. My chameleon, Casper, can recognize the color on the spray bottle we use to give him water, and when we hold it up, if he’s thirsty, he will go up and lick the bottle. Unlike what most people say, chameleons don’t actually change color according to their background. They actually change color according to their moods. They are just like giant, grumpy, moving, smart, mood rings. They make great pets because they get to know you and recognize you as a human. Just a warning, they can have mood swings, so if your chameleon hisses at you, they’re grumpy and you should leave them alone. Noa
